La Paz to Arica and back: travel by land from the mountains the sea

Travel between Arica and La Paz is very common, as locals of both cities love the change of airs from the mountains and buzzing activity of La Paz, the Bolivian capital, to the quieter salty airs of the Chilean city of Arica on the shores of the Pacific Ocean.

Arica is a port and coastal city 488 km from La Paz, and the 8-hour journey by bus takes you through amazing landscapes of the Bolivian Altiplano, near the Andes mountain range, through deserts and valleys until you reach Arica. The Chilean city offers beautiful beaches, amazing seafood and shopping experiences of all kinds and tailored to all pockets. Travelers descend around 3,900 meters, from the highest point at the border to sea level in Arica.

Buses to Arica depart from the Bus Station in La Paz, located on Peru Av. (see map in the link below).

You cross the border at Tambo Quemado, where you have to do migration and customs paperwork, which can take between one and two hours, depending on the time of year. The bus will be waiting for you on the Chilean side to continue the journey, non-stop to Arica. See the table below for information about bus companies, times of departure and prices. La Paz to Arica

To travel by bus from Arica to La Paz you have to take the bus from the Bus Station, located on Diego Portales Av. # 948. (see map below).

The journey takes 8 hours through Panamericana road, passing little towns like Valle de Luta, Pukara de Copaquilla and the famous Atacama desert to finally arrive at the border Chungurá-Tambo Quemado between Chile and Bolivia. The bus will stop at this border to do migration and customs, and then will continue along the Bolivian highlands through breathtaking landscapes, including the Sajama mountain. See the table below for more information.

From Puno to Copacabana by bus; everything you need to know

This time of year, tourists flood the routes that take you from La Paz  to Copacabana and from there to Puno and Cuzco, back and forth. Trips between the cities of Puno and Copacabana are very common and there are many options for making this trip by land. Read on to get all the tips to make the most of this route, and of your stay in both or either of these cities, which are tourist attractions of their own.

Puno is the highest city in Peru, at around 4000 meters above sea level. This important city is by lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world on the skirts of the Andes mountain range. In Puno you can take a boat trip to the Uru´s floating islands, visit the colonial architecture, such as the Cathedral.  The trip to Copacabana takes around 4 hours and offers impressive sights of the lake.

On the other hand (and on the other shore of Lake Titicaca) Copacabana is a beautiful town with colonial architecture and many cultural and natural tourist attractions. Copacabana offers boat trips, the best trout in the region in its restaurants on the shore, and tours to the islands of the Sun and Moon, where legend says the Incan Empire was founded.

Check out the following chart to see the different options for traveling between these two cities. You will notice there are no night trips available. This is because the border closes at around 19:00:

In order to take the bus from Puno to Copacabana, the traveler has to go to the bus terminal of Puno, which is located on Simon Bolivar Avenue (see map below). Before boarding the bus every passenger has to pay a terminal tax (Tami) that has a cost of around 0.4 $us and is not included in the bus ticket.

Please take into consideration that some buses make several short stops along the way, picking up passengers and sometimes women from local communities who make a living by selling food and beverages on the buses. Since these stops are not in the official itinerary, they may be upsetting for tourists.

There is no proper bus terminal in Copacabana, as it is a very small town, but buses stop at Abaroa Square. Here is the map:

If you are interested in spending a day or two in Copacabana before continuing your trip,  one of the most popular things to do is visit the Island of the Sun. The boats leave from the dock and cross the lake for about an hour and a half. On the island you will be able to see Incan ruins and experience the peace and energy of one of the most sacred places of the Incan empire. The boats back to Copacabana leave at 16:30 pm, reaching Copacabana at around 18pm.

Traveling from La Paz to Uyuni by land you’re traveling through Latin America, you surely do not want to miss these two destinations: Uyuni, the largest salt desert on Earth, an otherworldly landscape; on the other hand, La Paz is the highest capital in the world, recently named one of the 7 Wonder cities of the world due to its unusual topography and rich cultural life. There are two ways to travel from La Paz to Uyuni: making a direct trip by bus, or by going by bus from La Paz to Oruro, and then from Oruro to Uyuni by train.

By bus from La Paz to Uyuni

There are many bus companies that can make the direct trip from La Paz to Uyuni. Tickets Bolivia works with Panasur and Trans Omar, trustworthy and reliable companies that offer clients good quality services. Their schedules are the following:

Trans Omar has semi lie-flat buses (seats recline to 140 degrees), departing from La Paz every day at 20:00 and arriving in Uyuni at 06:00 in the morning. The service does not include food on board, but the bus makes rest stops along the way so passengers can buy a snack. Trans Omar also has a lie-flat bus (with seats that recline to 160 degrees) departing also at 20:00 and arriving in Uyuni at 7:00. The lie-flat bus costs 21.90 US$ per person, and the semi lie-flat costs 14.60 US$ per person.

On the other hand, the bus company Panasur has a bus from La Paz to Uyuni (lie flat) that departs everyday at 20:00 and arrives in Uyuni at 8:00. This one costs 23.36 US$

All the buses leave from the Bus Terminal of La Paz, located between Perú Av. and Uruguay Av. This is the map:

Uyuni has no proper bus terminal, but it has a street where buses depart from and arrive at. Here is the map and street address:

From La Paz to Uyuni by bus and train

With this option, passengers travel from La Paz to Oruro by bus (the cost is around 5 US$) and then they take the train to Uyuni. This option allows the traveler to enjoy the trip by train, which in and of itself an unforgettable experience. Buses depart from La Paz to Oruro practically all day, every 30 minutes, from the Bus Terminal of La Paz (see map above). The trip lasts around three hours and the buses arrive at the Bus Terminal of Oruro, located on Gregorio Reynolds Av. Here is the map:

Once you in Oruro, the passenger must take a taxi to the Train Station, located on Velasco Galvarro Av.

The trains that travel from Oruro to Uyuni are Wara Wara del Sur and Expreso del Sur. Wara Wara del Sur leaves on Wednesdays and Sundays at 19:00, arriving in Uyuni at 02:20 in the morning. Expreso del Sur leaves on Tuesdays and Fridays at 14:00, arriving in Uyuni at 21:20.
